A 24-year-old miner was shot and killed by a gun-toting security guard at Black Water Backdam, Kanawaruk, Mahdia, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) on Wednesday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Akeem Caesar of Wismar, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
Prior to the man’s death, he had been imbibing with his friends at a popular bar in the area when an argument erupted between himself and another man.
The verbal row quickly escalated into an altercation which saw a 21-year-old miner intervening and stopping them.
However, after the fight ended, Caesar and his friends headed to their mining camp.
Nonetheless, at about 23:30h, the now-dead man and his 21-year-old friend stopped along the roadway and were conversing when they were confronted by a man carrying a shotgun.
The gunman, identified as a security guard commonly referred to as “Tallman”, allegedly shot Caesar to his left foot and gun-butted him. He then fled the scene.
Caesar was immediately picked up and taken to the Mahdia District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a Post-Mortem as Police continue their hunt for the suspect who remains on the run.
