Man accused of robbing GDF rank remanded

A 33-year-old man, who is accused of robbing a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Lieutenant after asking him for a drink of water was on Friday remanded to prison. Melvin Jeane of Mango Lane, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The unrepresented man pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on January 21, 2021, at Market Street, East Ruimveldt, while being armed with a gun, he robbed GDF Lieutenant Kaya Dover, of items including jewellery, electronic gadgets and documents to the value of $430,000.

Robbery accused: Melvin Jeane

The Police prosecutor revealed that Jeane and Dover are known to each other. On the day in question, at around 04:45h, Dover was about to enter his yard when he saw Jeane staggering on the road.
According to the Police, Jeane walked up to Dover and asked him for some water. As the GDF rank turned around to give him the water, Jeane whipped out a gun, pointed it to the rank’s head and robbed him. Following the robbery, Jeane ran away but the soldier gave chase and subsequently made a report at the East Ruimveldt Police Station. Dover later showed Police ranks the yard in which Jeane entered after allegedly robbing him.
Upon arrival, Police ranks searched the yard and found a national identification card, GDF identification card and a Republic Bank card belonging to Dover. Following investigations, Jeane was arrested and charged for the offence. (G1)
