Man admits threatening to “pay someone to kill” neighbour

– gets 2 weeks suspended sentence

A resident of La Grange, West Bank Demerara, was late last week handed a conditional imprisonment sentence of two weeks when he appeared before West Demerara Magistrate, Rushell Liverpool.
Jaitoon Baksh admitted that on August 1, 2017, at La Grange, he made use of threatening language toward his neighbour, Armin Cook, saying that he would “pay someone to kill” her.
He made the death threats during a drunken tirade during the afternoon period of the day in question. According to Cook, it was a normal occurrence for her neighbour to utter such remarks whenever he consumes alcohol.
“We were taking two drinks and I did not know what I was saying,” the accused admitted during his arraignment at the Wales Magistrate’s Court.
Cook noted that on a previous occasion, Police ranks came to his La Grange premises and warned him to refrain from his behaviour but when the ranks left, “he cuss up”, the woman pointed out.
Magistrate Liverpool before handing down her decision expressed that drinking was “no excuse” for such behaviour. She therefore told the accused that his two-week suspended sentence will be in place for one year. Should Baksh repeat a similar offence, he will be incarcerated for the said period in addition to possible additional penalties imposed by the presiding Magistrate. He was released and ordered to keep the peace.
