Arrested: Teron Cameron

Attempts to smuggle items into the prisons have prompted the Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, to re-emphasise that the prison authorities have seen an increase in attempts by civilians to smuggle prohibited items into the prison. Elliot said smuggling contraband into a correctional facility is an offence that has serious consequences.
He has called on civilians to recognise the dangers to which they place themselves, society, inmates and officers by engaging in the trade of contraband within the walls of the prison.
On Saturday last, during his quarterly muster and general inspection of officers, the Director of Prisons advised prison officers at the location to remain alert and observant while on duty, and noted that all the correctional facilities face formidable threats from contraband smuggling.

Elliott has said that while there is increased monitoring and surveillance at all prison locations, over the past weeks, it was observed that several attempts were made by members of the public to smuggle contraband into the various prison facilities. This, he said, continues to pose significant challenges to the service. However, he warned that there will be no ‘let up’ in bringing down corrupt officers and family members of inmates who are bent on breaking the law. (G9)
