Man dies in Pomeroon River boat mishap

Police in Regional Division Two are investigating a fatal incident that occurred on Sunday, in which the body of a 28-year-old, was discovered in the Jacklow area, Pomeroon River, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
Dead is Niftan Persaud, a self-employed resident of Abram’s Creek, Upper Pomeroon River.
Reports are that Persaud had been using a wooden boat belonging to his father, Oscar Persaud, a 70-year-old pensioner of No. 50 Village, Corentyne Berbice, who also resides part-time at Abram’s Creek.
Persaud stated that his son had borrowed the boat, which has a 15HP Yamaha outboard engine to run errands and on Sunday at about 15:00h, Niftan Persaud reportedly left home saying he was travelling to visit his child’s mother, from Siriki, Upper Pomeroon River. Oscar Persaud reported that by Monday at about 06:30h, he had not heard from his son and travelled to Charity, Essequibo Coast, to make enquiries but was unable to locate him. While there, he received a call from his son’s child’s mother, who also said she had not heard from him since he sent her a message on Sunday.

Reports are that based on investigation, a couple of Jacklow, Pomeroon River, reported hearing a boat travelling and then a loud impact on Sunday night at about 22:00h. Checks in the area on Monday revealed Persaud’s boat floating on the western side of the Upper Pomeroon River in the Jacklow area. At about 14:15h a search party led by Oscar Persaud and relatives discovered the body of Niftan Persaud approximately 10 feet from a wooden pile in the river.
Police observed the body clad in green and black shorts with visible injuries included damage to the upper back, left ear, and nose, which are suspected to have been caused by piranha fish.
The body was transported to Charity Hospital and was later transferred to the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.
