Man killed by speeding truck identified as Sophia resident

—driver likely to be charged today

The pedestrian, who was killed on Sunday afternoon after being hit by an alleged speeding truck along the Leonora Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD), has been identified as 39-year-old Romel Carter of Lot 498 D Field South Sophia, Greater Georgetown.

The dead man’s siblings, Kempton Carter and Karen Carter, visited the Police on Thursday and were taken to the funeral home where they positively identified the man.
The identification was made after the Police released the photo of the deceased for members of the public to assist in identifying him; the siblings were made aware that the person in the photograph appeared to be their brother.
It was reported that the accident occurred around 13:30h on Sunday, in close proximity of the Leonora Police Station, WCD.
After the accident, the driver of the truck reportedly picked up the injured man and took him to the hospital for treatment but after realising that the pedestrian was dead, he attempted to flee but was arrested by the Police.
It was further reported that at the time of the accident, there were two other occupants of the truck who made contact with Police to notify them of the accident
Additionally, an ex-Police Officer who was passing the area when the fatal accident took place gave the Police enough information that led to the truck driver’s arrest.
He remains in Police custody but is expected to be charged today.
