Man slapped with 17 years’ jail term for raping girl, 12

Child rapist Gavin Assanah

Found guilty on two child- rape charges by a majority verdict of 10-2 last month, and remanded to prison to await a sentencing hearing, Gavin Assanah has on Thursday been sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment for the crime.
Trial Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall imposed a jail term of 16 years for the first count, and increased the sentence to 17 years for the second count. She has, however, ordered that the sentences be served concurrently.
The indictments against Assanah stated that he engaged in sexual penetration of the girl on January 26, 2014, and again between August 1 and 31, 2014. The offences were committed in the county of Demerara.
According to the prosecution’s facts, Assanah, who had been a close friend of the girl’s mother, raped the girl on two occasions when she was just 12.
Assanah was represented by Attorney-at-Law Euclin Gomes, while State Counsel Cecilia Corbin had appeared on behalf of the prosecution. This trial was heard in the Sexual Offences Court in Georgetown.
