Market vendor busted with 4 lbs of ganja granted $250K bail

Days after being intercepted with four pounds (lbs) of ganja along the Ruimveldt Public Road, in the vicinity of Massy Supermarket, 27-year-old Tyrone De Groot was charged and granted bail.

De Groot was arrested on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, and appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, where a charge of trafficking in narcotics was read to him.
He, however, pleaded not guilty and was granted $250,000 bail with the condition that he report to the Police every first and third Friday until the determination of the matter. He is expected to make his next court appearance on July 24, 2026.

The ganja that was found in De Groot’s possession

It was reported that ranks, acting on information received, conducted an intelligence-led operation in the Ruimveldt area, where De Groot, a vendor from River View, Ruimveldt, was contacted.
A search of his belongings led to the discovery of a black plastic bag containing suspected cannabis. He was escorted to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, where the narcotic was weighed and found to amount to four lbs.
