Mazaruni man knifed to death while protecting younger brother

A farmer who was stabbed by a teenager during a scuffle over an old grievance succumbed to his injuries while waiting to be air-dashed to Georgetown from Kamarang, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
Dead is 23-year-old Hernan Leman, of Ammokopai Village, Upper Mazaruni River. He was stabbed once to his abdomen on Sunday afternoon, but took his last breath about 09:15h on Monday morning. The 18-year-old suspect also received injuries and is listed in critical condition.
Based on reports received, the now dead man and the suspect reside in the same village and are known to each other. However, on Sunday, the two men had a misunderstanding over an old grievance whereby the suspect had assaulted the younger brother of the now dead man.
The argument escalated into a scuffle during which the 18-year-old armed himself with a knife and dealt Leman one stab to his abdomen. Upon seeing this, the younger brother of the victim, retaliated by picking up the said knife and dealing the suspect one blow to his back.
Both Fredericks and Leman were transported to the Kamarang Hospital, where they were examined and admitted in critical condition.
Owing to the severity of their injuries, it was recommended that the men be transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital to receive further medical attention.
However, Leman succumbed to his injuries as he waited to be transported to the city. The suspect was subsequently transferred and was admitted a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital under police guard.
The victim’s brother, who inflicted the stab wound on the suspect, was arrested and was currently assisting with investigations. Leman’s body is presently at the Kamarang Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
