The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) has named a 30-man provisional squad ahead of its upcoming international 15s fixture against Bermuda, following several weeks of preparation which concluded with an intra-squad trial match at the National Park rugby field last weekend.
Veteran tight-head prop Rondel “Bull” McArthur has been appointed Captain with Godfrey Broomes, another experienced player, as his Vice Captain.
GRFU President Ryan Gonsalves confirmed that the squad will be reduced to a final 22-man team on Friday as the selectors finalise their combinations for the encounter. The “Green Machine” is scheduled to face Bermuda on Saturday from 15:00h at the Rugby Field, National Park, in what is expected to be a key test for the side which is in a rebuilding phase.
The announced squad is a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging players, with McArthur and Broomes in leadership roles. Among the forwards listed are Makayah Smith, Devon Charles, James Osborne, Phoibian Joseph, Shawn David, Christian Klass, and Sebastian Manifile, while the backs include Osie McKenzie, Broomes, Owen Adonis, Odida Douglas, Rickford Cummings, Godfrey Polloydore, and Lionel Holder.
Additional players named in the extended squad include Ryan Skinner, Quason Butters, Kelvin Grant, Renaldo Niles, Osbert Robertson, Michael Edwards, Gavin McPherson, Vallon Adams, Michael Barrow, Akino James, Kevon David, Marlon Small, Adrian Hall, Jonathan Garnett, and Jamal Junior.
The team will be guided by Head Coach Claudius Butts, with support from assistant coaches Elwin Chase and Ryan Hinckson.
Off the field, the management team includes Gonsalves and Roger Perrier, while medical support will be provided by team doctor Patrick Lindo and physiotherapist Kelly Coonjah.
