Day three action on Thursday evening at the Georgetown Club took an intriguing turn as the Farfan and Mendes Junior Skill Level Tournament continued. The highlight of the night came courtesy of Zachary Persaud and James Mekdeci who took on each other in a breath-taking battle.
It was evident from the get go that each player came looking for a win and they traded point for point in the first two sets; each earning an 11-9 win over the other.
However, the third set saw Mekdeci buckle down to stake his claim in run of six points after a two all draw, before conceding one point and then taking the set at 11-3.
Persaud started the fourth set shakily perhaps due to the loss in the third set and allowed James a four point start; Persaud did well to counter and take a massive seven points of his own; rounding the set up eventually in his favour at 11-9. At two sets apiece, Mekdeci came out to dominate in the fifth, storming to an 11-3 final score. Every set of this match saw displays of long rallies, surprising determination and great skill from both players, with Mekdeci certainly earning his victory.
Also treating onlookers to a level of squash far beyond expected in category C were Jason Gomes and Louis Da Silva. Power house Gomes met a calm determined DaSilva in a four set clash that shifted in each players favour in the first two setss with Jason securing the wins, but saw Louis step up in the third and Jason bring it home in the fourth to end 13-11, 12,-10, 8-11, 11-6.
Category D provided further excitement with most of the matches going to five sets, but Chad DeAbreu secured his win conceding only one set to Dhiren Persuad with a display of measured serves, killer drop shots and good length drives.
Certainly after the display on Thursday, spectators will be anticipating continuing thrillers in the remaining days of the tournament which concludes on Sunday.
