Men charged with murder, illegal firearm possession

Two men this week appeared at the Vigilance and Sparendaam Magistrate’s Courts, on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD), to answer separate charges. One of the men was charged with murder, while the other was charged after he was found with an illegal firearm.

Charged: Vijay Basraj

Last Tuesday, Vijay Basraj, called “George”, 36, a mason of Lot 3 Le Ressouvenir Railway, ECD, was charged for the offence of murder, contrary to common law committed on Ravin Seeperaud.
He appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court before Her Worship George where he was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
The matter was adjourned on April 25, 2022.
It is still unclear when and how the murder occurred since Police have not yet issued a report on this matter.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Collin Campbell, 39, a security guard of Lot 35 Middle Walk Ann’s Grove, ECD, was charged with the offence of unlawful possession of firearm without licence contrary to Section 16 (2) (b) of the Firearm Act Chapter 16:05, and unlawful possession of ammunition contrary to Section 16 (b) of the Firearm Act Chapter 16:05.

He appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court before Her Worship Fabayo Azore, where the charges were read to him, and he pleaded not guilty to both charges.
He was later remanded to prison, and the matter adjourned to April 11.
