The Over-40 team of Meten-Meer-Zorg claimed the inaugural edition of the Daniel Richmond Memorial Cup with an emphatic win against the Guyana Cricket Umpires and Scorers Council (GCUSC) at the Everest Cricket Club Ground on Saturday when they defeated them by 75 runs.
Zaheer Haniff produced a match-winning performance for the Meten-Meer-Zorg XI, as he was the top scorer with 31 runs while he bagged 2-17 enroute to victory.
Batting first, the Meten-Meer-Zorg Masters amassed 185 runs off of their allotted 20 overs; openers Tariq Khan with 26 (3 fours, 2 sixes) and Munnishar Balgobin (5 fours) getting them off to a flying start.
The first wicket would fall with the score at 46 when Khan was stumped, he was soon followed by Balgobin who was caught at long off to leave the Masters at 65-2, another wicket just two runs later left the Masters reeling when Shaw Persaud was bowled with the score at 67.
However Jetendra Kishore (30) and Zaheer Hanniff (31) would ensure there was smooth sailing as the masters coasted to a final score of 185.
Chasing 185 would always be a tough task for the Umpires XI who were dismal in their chase, Captain Ryan Banwarie was the top scorer with 25, while Shawn Massiah mustered a spirited 20 and Mario Nichols 10 to be the main contributors as they were skittled out for a paltry 115.
The Memorial Cup is to be an annual event held in the honour of local cricket stalwart Daniel Richmond who died in an accident on Durban Street in May. Trophies for the match were sponsored by Stars Sports and the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB).
Mario Nichols received a trophy for the best player on the losing side, while Zaheer Haniff carted away the man of the match trophy.
