Virtue was in favour of Meten-Meer-Zorg West Sports Club on Sunday as they clinched victory against Independence Sports Club in the long awaited West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA) 40 over finals at Joe Vieira Park.
Asked to take first strike, Meten-Meer-Zorg made good of the offer to chalk up 174 before they were dismissed in the 38th over. Emmanuel Chrisnauth led the way with 40 and was supported by J. Maxwell and M. Nandkishore, who made 24 apiece. Bowling for Independence, Anand Bharrat claimed 3-32 from eight overs.
In pursuit of the target, Independence fell four runs short as they were bowled out in 37.2 overs for 170 despite a determine half century from Shiv Gobin.
Gobin played well for 63 which contained four fours and five sixes. Johnny Paton chipped in with 30. Looknauth Chinkoo was the pick of the bowlers for the winners, finishing with 4-25 from eight overs while N. Chattergoon ended with 3-39 from eight overs.
On Sunday cricket will return to Joe Vieira Park as WDCA looks to complete its eagerly anticipated T20s finals. Both finals will be played on the said day. Action is said to get underway at 10:00 hours.
