Miner shot, cop under close arrest after alleged cutlass attack at creek

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has launched an investigation into a shooting incident at Chanta Creek, along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, which left a gold miner injured and a police rank under close arrest.
The incident occurred at about 17:00h on Sunday, according to police reports.
Police said a detective sergeant was at the creek with family members when he became involved in a misunderstanding with several men. During the confrontation, the rank was allegedly attacked with a cutlass.
Investigators said the officer subsequently discharged a round from his service-issued 9mm pistol in the direction of the men. As a result, a 37-year-old gold miner of Yarrowkabra Creek sustained a suspected gunshot wound to his right leg.
The injured man was assisted by relatives along with police ranks and transported to the McKenzie Hospital, where he is receiving treatment. His condition has been listed as stable.
The police rank involved in the incident has since been placed under close arrest as investigations continue.
