On Sunday evening, Guyana crowned its representative to the Miss World Pageant at the Pegasus Hotel.
Joylyn Anita Conway was crowned by the 2018 Miss World Guyana, Ambika Ramraj at a small but elegant event.
Conway was chosen by a panel of nine judges during the selection process. Conway is a proud Berbician and a Natural Sciences enthusiast holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and a minor in Biology from the University of Guyana.
She is currently a lecturer and lab instructor attached to the University of Guyana and the New Amsterdam Technical Institute.
This Guyanese beauty is a strong believer in her faith as a communicant Methodist. Her mantra, “Aspire to inspire before you expire” encompasses much of her hobbies – teaching, dancing, volunteering, and coaching young women and children on personal development. She also enjoys travelling, trying new foods, and putting smiles on frowning faces.
Conway was elected Secretary for the year 2019-2020 and President-Elect for 2020-2021 during Rotaract’s handing-over and induction ceremony on June 22, 2019.
She lives by the quote “it costs nothing to light another candle”; hence, her mission is to inspire girls in STEM to embrace their dreams with confidence under her Beauty With A Purpose (BWAP) project “STEM Girl Glo”.
“I truly look forward for all this journey has in store for me – both the moments that may be smooth and others not quite, because I know that at the end of it all, its purpose is to mould me into becoming a better version of myself – a well-rounded young woman, while lighting other candles via the work of my BWAP “STEM Girl Glow””, she stated.
She represents the youthful qualities and culture of Guyanese women that make us unique as a people from a human resources perspective.
Although she believes more can be done by all of us to ensure our women and young people on a whole are visible and valued; we are definitely moving in the right direction.
“I invite all Guyanese to join in the mission to increase the value of every Guyanese woman –get involved in the smallest of ways and/or continue doing your part as part of casting a wider net to ensure the youthful presence, poise, eloquence, charm, intellect, purpose and drive of the Guyanese woman is seen, felt, heard – supported and promoted.
Conway will represent Guyana on the international stage later in the year in Japan.
