More than 1200 hinterland residents benefit from housing programmes

– 330 homes under construction across Regions 1, 7, 8 & 9

More than 1200 residents from 32 hinterland villages have benefitted from the Government’s housing programmes, with 330 homes either completed or under construction across Regions One (Barima-Waini), Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), and Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).
This was revealed by Minister within the Ministry of Housing Vanessa Benn during her presentation at the National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) on Thursday.
Addressing village leaders from across Guyana’s hinterland communities, Benn outlined the Government’s ongoing investments to ensure that more Amerindian families have access to safe, durable and affordable homes. “Despite challenges, the Government ensures our hinterland brothers and sisters live in dignity,” she stated.
She highlighted the objectives of the Hinterland Housing Programme, which is focused on improving quality of life, providing full housing subsidies for eligible beneficiaries, promoting sustainable homeownership, and creating employment opportunities by utilising locally available building materials and labour within hinterland communities.
She related that since the programme’s inception, 330 homes have been targeted across Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine, with 220 homes already completed and another 110 currently under construction.
The initiative has directly benefited approximately 1200 persons in 32 villages, bringing improved living conditions and greater security to families.
Minister Benn also updated the conference on the Lethem Housing Support and Home Construction Programme, which was launched in 2022 and targets 600 families.
The Minister also highlighted the Government’s latest housing initiative announced by Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo during the National Toshaos Conference, under which $3 billion will be invested this year to assist Amerindian families in constructing new homes and repairing existing ones.
The programme will be implemented in collaboration with village councils and community oversight committees to ensure transparency, accountability and equitable distribution.
The presentation underscored the Government’s people-centred approach to development, ensuring that families in every corner of Guyana have the opportunity to own quality homes, improve their standard of living, and build stronger, more resilient communities.
