Motorcyclist struck down by drunken driver

A 33-year-old motorcyclist of Maida Farm Village, Corentyne, Berbice, is hospitalised after sustaining a broken arm and leg after colliding with an alleged drunken driver on Wednesday evening.

Police reported that the accident occurred at about 22:20h at Eversham Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to Police, motor car PJJ 3641, owned and driven by a 47-year-old man called “Cake Man”, of Number 46 Village Corentyne, Berbice, was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane on Eversham Public Road at a fast rate, while the motorcycle ridden by Persaud was proceeding north along the western drive lane on the same road.
The driver of the motor car claimed that while driving, he saw a motorcycle coming in the opposite direction which suddenly swerved right, into his path. He added that the right-side front portion of his car collided with the motorcycle.
As a result of the collision, Persaud was flung into the air and ended up in a nearby trench. He was taken out of the trench in a conscious state by public-spirited citizens and to the Port Mourant Public Hospital but was later taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
He is nursing a broken right leg and a broken right arm. Breathalyser tests were conducted on the driver of the car and they revealed that he had 95 and 98 micrograms of alcohol in his breath. This is above the legal limit of 35 micrograms. He remains in custody. (G1)
