Teen killed after motorcycle crashes into cow

Mahindra Persaud, 16, was killed after the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a cow on Saturday at Number 78 Village Corentyne, Berbice. He was the pillion rider of motorcycle CJ 1342 which was being ridden by an 18-year-old unlicenced rider, Police said.
Police reported that the motorcycle was proceeding north along the western drive lane of Crabwood Creek Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice, at a fast rate of speed when it is alleged by the 18-year-old that about 15 feet ahead of him a light-brown cow ran from west to east into his path.
He claimed that the front portion of the motorcycle collided with the right-side front shoulder of the cow. As a result of the impact, both he and Persaud fell onto the road and sustained injuries.
They were picked up in a conscious condition by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where they were attended to and sent away. At around 07:00h on Sunday, Persaud was taken back to the hospital in an unconscious state.
He was referred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for further treatment and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. He was pronounced dead later that day.
His body is presently lying at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. Police said that a Notice of Intended Prosecution was served on the 18-year-old as investigations continue. Police also said that the accident was reported by the deceased’s father. (G1)
