MYO Karate Club host inaugural grading

The Muslim Youth Organisation of Guyana (MYO) hosted their first ever Karate grading exercise on Saturday, and seven of the 27 registered members displayed their kata. Four gained their yellow belts, while two were promoted straight to orange and one youngster gained a purple upgrade.
Since their formation in the 1960s, the Muslim Youth Organisation of Guyana have focused on youth development mainly in the form of sports. Cricket has, however, been the dominant sport, having mostly male teens and adult participants.
The Organisation’s executives wanted to have a feature sport to capture a younger population along with female participation. In March this year, in collaboration with

the Guyana Karate Association, MYO embarked on a new challenge — a Shotokan (traditional) Karate Club.
Housed at the organisation’s complex at Woolford Avenue in Thomas Lands, Georgetown, the Karate Club boasts a safe, comfortable and clean environment, is geared to teach discipline and respect for all, and caters for both males and females from as young as five (5) years old.
Classes are held on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4pm to 5pm, and are taught by the President of the Guyana Karate Association herself, Sensei Nadia Rohoman, a third Dan black belt who has represented Guyana on both local and international levels in previous years.
Executives of the Muslim Youth Organisation of Guyana urge more females to learn to defend themselves by partaking in the Karate Club. Registration forms can be uplifted from the venue or from any of the organisation’s executives. Specific persons of contact are Nadia (684-5411), Kadir (670-8207) and Ralph (625-4330).
