National Championships set for June 26-28; Archibald ruled out through injury

Guyana’s leading track and field athletes will converge on the Lenora Track and Field Centre from June 26 to 28 when the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) stages its National Seniors, Youth and Juniors Championships, the country’s premier athletics competition for 2026.
The championships are expected to attract the nation’s top performers, including a number of overseas-based athletes who are understood to be returning home to compete. The event will also serve as an important qualifying platform for athletes targeting international assignments later this year, including the World Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, and the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
One notable absentee, however, will be reigning men’s 100-metre champion Emmanuel Archibald, who is currently side-lined with injury and will therefore be unable to defend his national title.
According to the AAG, the championships bring together the country’s elite athletes and are regarded as the association’s most important annual event. Athletes will be looking to produce strong performances as they seek to secure qualification standards and impress selectors ahead of upcoming international competitions.
To ensure the smooth running of the championships, the AAG has established a local organising committee which has been working to put all the necessary systems in place ahead of the three-day meet.
The association has also received support from several sponsors, including Guyana Beverages Inc., the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the National Sports Commission and the Guyana Olympic Association.
The competition will begin at 17:00h on Friday, June 26, before continuing from 10:00h on Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28. The AAG has encouraged members of the public to attend and support the country’s athletes as they compete for national honours and opportunities on the international stage.
