NDC launches investigation into unsanitary Chinese restaurant

…after roach found in fried rice

The Little Diamond-Herstelling Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) Sanitation Department has launched an investigation into the allegation that a roach was cooked in a batch of Chinese fried rice.
The investigation was launched after an overseas-based couple bought the food from a popular Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD) restaurant and subsequently found a roach inside.
Speaking with Guyana Times, Head of the Sanitation Department, Ms Holder (only name given) confirmed that an investigation would be launched into the incident and possible unsanitary conditions at the food facility.
The affected couple said that they recently returned to Guyana and wanted to have some Chinese fried rice.
On January 2 about 11:45h, they went to the Herstelling restaurant and purchased the food.
The woman stated that she bought two servings of Chinese fried rice and left the restaurant.
“I was driving and my husband began eating in the car, so when I stopped at the traffic light, I bent over to taste the food and it was then I saw the roach in his food,” the woman said, relating that the dead roach appeared to have been cooked in the food
She explained that her husband’s instinctive response was to vomit. “I had to stop because after I showed him, he started to throw up; I had to get him some coconut water because he was so upset in his stomach.”
She further explained they immediately returned to the restaurant, and the cashier who was taking orders advised them to “hold on” outside so that she could contact her boss.
However, the angry woman said that she waited over half an hour only for the cashier to return to say that the boss was unavailable
When this newspaper contacted the restaurant over the allegation, the manager who gave his name only as “Chow” said that he was busy and there was nothing he could do about the situation.
Just recently, another popular city Chinese restaurant came in for harsh criticism after a customer found what was later identified as a human tooth in his food.
