Nedd, Anderson get nod for Windies U-19 20-man squad
– Umroa, Singh omitted
After holding the (CWI) Regional Under-19 tournament and the three trial matches, Cricket West Indies management has trimmed to just 20 members the West Indies Under-19 squad for the 2020 ICC Under-19 50 Over World Cup tournament to be held in South Africa.
The Guyanese duo of Ashmead Nedd and Kevlon Anderson has been included in this 20-member squad, while Kelvin Umroa and Sachin Singh have been omitted.
Based on individual performances recorded in the Regional Under-19 tournament — which was won by Barbados in Antigua — and the three trial matches, selectors were able to assess the players and determine whom to select. These 20 selected members will shortly be encamped in training in Antigua as preparation for the Under-19 World Cup continues.
Ashmead Nedd, the Guyana Under-19 captain and left-arm spinner who has prior experience participating in the ICC Under-19 World Cup tournament, began his Best of the Best matches with 2-15 from eight overs. In that first match, his three Guyanese team mates fared as follows: Umroa had 3-15, Singh made a duck, while Anderson chipped in with 19.
The second match between the Best of the Best players across the Caribbean saw both Singh (06) and Anderson (09) failing to score big. Umroa had 1-41, while Nedd bowled economically although he ended wicket-less on 0-13 in six overs.
Players from other countries have had greater impact on these trial matches, and some of them may have earned spots in the team based on their performances.
In the third and final match, Anderson scored 32, Singh failed with a duck via the run-out route, Nedd had 1-50 and Umroa snared 2-43.
The full 20-member squad will be announced shortly, prior to its preparation in Antigua next month.
