Ninavalle calls for more ‘tangible’support

President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Steve Ninvalle highlighted the importance of developing boxing at a young level at the conclusion of the 2nd Caribbean Schoolboys/Juniors Boxing Championship on Sunday at the National Gymnasium but to do this it would mean investment is needed.

Nivalle speaking to media operatives pointed out that the injection of resources is much needed for the development of sports as he explained that “one cannot expect to harvest sugar-cane if there is no planting done”.

He went unto say “I would want to urge the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) to see that since we have submitted our four year plan we can see tangible results in the near future; when I say tangible results I mean that if we have submitted those plans we can be called in to see exactly where it is that the assistance will come from.”

This comes after the GABA presented its four year plan to the GOA in January as they seek to have their boxers properly prepared to secure a medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The plan details the course that would lead to a strategic development of the sport and the addition of at least another Olympic medal for Guyana.

Ninvalle felt that in order for the young boxers to improve they must come against opponents of good quality.

“The plans for next year is to go further afield, although we have the Caribbean, in order for us to push the development of this, we would want to see teams from the United States coming into this tournament, that is the only way we are going to go from where we are to where we want to go.”

He congratulated his executives, sponsors and those who made it possible to make the event a success; he concluded by expressing hope that next year will bring an even better tournament and continued development in the sport.

The GABA had won the “most improved sports association” at the 2016 National Sports Awards while Boxing Coach Seabert Blake won male coach-of-the year.
