With the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA)/National Sports Commission (NSC) Mashramani Badminton Tournament set to resume action today, day one was, as expected, a highly competitive start to the tourney.
Playing at the usual venue – the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, the Tournament saw competition in the Men’s and Ladies Open Singles which were played on Wednesday and set to conclude today.
In the first round of the Open Men’s Singles, Marlon Chung defeated Lakshman Das 21-9, 21-15 while Darrell Carpenay defeated Tyrese Jeffrey 21-14, 9-21, 21-15, as Gokarn Ramdhani defeated Sekhar Mallampati 21-13, 21-10.
That category went on to the quarter-finals, which saw Nicholas Ali defeating Marlon Chung 21-14, 21-6; Jonathan Mangra defeating Gokarn Ramdhani 21-11, 21-7 and Avinash Odit defeating Javed Rahamann 26-24, 16-21, 21-19 in a thrilling three-setter.
Meanwhile, in the Open Ladies Singles Round-Robin, Priyanna Ramdhani defeated Ayanna Watson 21-9, 21-11 before going on to defeat Emelia Ramdhani 21-12, 21-12, while Greer Jackson defeated Pricilla Moore 21-10, 21-8 and Emelia Ramdhani 21-11, 21-10. Moore returned to defeat Ayanna Watson 21-15, 21-10.
Today, spectators will see the action resuming with the remaining quarter-final match between Ronald Chang Yuen and Darrel Carpenay and the semi-finals and finals.
After these divisions are completed, the Tournament will then see competition in the Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 Boys and Girls Singles on Saturday at the same venue from 10:00h to 14:00h
