Prior to the team’s departure, it was revealed that the Green Machine had received the timely assistance of the National Sports Commission (NSC), to the tune of $2 million.
The presentation was made by Director of Sport (DoS), Steve Ninvalle at his Middle Street, Georgetown office and on the receiving end was the team’s Manager and GRFU President Ryan Dey and Head Coach Theodore Henry.
This weekend, Guyana’s fixtures will comprise an opening contest with Curaçao on Saturday, mid-morning. Later in the afternoon, Guyana will battle old rivals Jamaica, after which they will take on The Bahamas on Saturday evening.
The weekend tournament will act as a qualification tournament for the Commonwealth Games, to be held from July 28 to August 8. The male team that finish on top will represent RAN at the Games in Birmingham, England.
Additionally, the top two men’s teams and a female team will gain qualification to the Rugby World Cup Sevens, billed for September 9-11, 2022, in Cape Town, South Africa.
