NWD man remanded for Easter Monday murder

Christopher Van-Nooten, a 48-year-old mason accused of the Easter Monday murder of 44-year-old Sherwin Smith, appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court charged with that murder, which occurred on April 18.

Van-Nooten, of Barimanobo, Mabaruma, North West District (NWD), was not required to plead to the indictable charge, and was remanded to prison until May 17.
Smith, of Kumaka Waterfront, NWD, was stabbed to death during the Easter weekend celebrations. The incident occurred at the Mabaruma Settlement Ground during an Easter Monday activity.
Reports are that Van-Nooten, who was armed with a knife, walked up to Smith and stabbed him twice – once to the abdomen and once to the neck. Smith ran to a nearby car, and was rushed to the Mabaruma Regional Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
A Policeman who was stationed at the compound’s gate witnessed what had transpired and immediately arrested Van-Nooten. (G1)
