The festivities for the Hindu Holiday of Phagwah allowed the Old Fort Hockey Club to host their annual fun day at the Guyana Police Force Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary where they were crowed the day’s champion on Sunday.
Joining in the celebration of the day were Saints Hockey Club, GCC Hockey Club and Hikers Hockey Club, however hockey was not the only sport the athletes participated in as track races and novelty events shared the limelight.
The weather was on their side on Sunday after a rainy Saturday and it was all sun and fun but when the dust was settled it was Old Fort with an unassailable lead having amassed a total of 105 points. Hikers, their closest rivals, took second place with 85 points while GCC, who were the defending champions, secured 55 points and Saints brought up the rear with 30 points.
These points were awarded to victorious teams in events such as egg throwing with a four member team, furthest scooper, a 7 a side tire relay, 4×1 relay, mop stick race and an entertaining 11 a side relay race.
However, the featured event included a series of 10 minute hockey matches which saw competition in the categories of both male and female, under-17, U-20, U-30, U-45 and a general 7-a-side match.
Saints dominated the younger groupings while GCC were dominant in the older divisions but at the end of the day, all participating teams were thoroughly entertained.
