Over 1000 hampers distributed to Pomeroon residents

The regional administration of Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) on Sunday distributed over 1000 hampers to flood-affected communities along the Lower Pomeroon area. In addition, the team assessed the impact of the present flooding in the region.

Regional Executive Officer Devanand Ramdatt told Guyana Times that the entire Pomeroon is severely affected by the flooding while adding that the water is receding very slowly. He noted that those areas that are affected have about four-five feet of water.

“It is a challenging period for the residents, especially the elders who grow up in the Lower Pomeroon and are old as seventy-plus years… scores of residents and cash crops farmers are currently submerged and the floodwaters are not receding. Elders said to me that during their 30 to 60 years of living in the Pomeroon, they have never before witnessed such a high level of water on their land,” Ramdatt explained.
Meanwhile, the Regional Health Officer, Dr Ranjeev Singh, explained that residents are at risk of contracting diseases such as skin infections, leptospirosis, diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases.
He noted that a follow-up team from the Environmental Health Office will be dispatched into communities to educate affected residents on safe practices.
The region has experienced high-intensity rainfall since May 25. Several acres of land were inundated with floodwaters in the Pomeroon and at Charity.
