Brandon Parks scored twice to lead GDF’s charge, while Western Tigers squandered a two-goal halftime advantage in a heated 3-3 draw with Fruta Conquerors.
Parks opened the scoring in the 18th minute and struck again in the 27th to give GDF a 2-0 lead at the interval.
Police briefly raised hopes of a recovery when Seymore Munroe reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute, shortly after the restart. However, GDF quickly regained control through Ravin Vannooten’s 44th-minute goal.
Shanol Munroe extended the advantage in the 47th minute, before LeBron Mendonca completed the scoring in the 73rd to secure a comfortable victory.
In the other match, Nyron Barrow’s first-half hat-trick was not enough to earn Western Tigers all three points against Fruta Conquerors.
Barrow scored in the 13th and 20th minutes before Azariel Pilgrim replied for Fruta in the 24th. The Tigers skipper completed his treble in the 35th minute, sending his team into the break with a 3-1 cushion.
Fruta recovered through two second-half penalties. Jaden Christian converted in the 71st minute to narrow the gap, and Joshua James levelled the contest from the spot in the 78th.
Western Tigers lost two players between those goals. Barrow, who had been booked in the 37th minute, received a second yellow card and was dismissed in the 75th. Rayad Handy was shown a straight red a minute later.
According to a supplied account of the incident, Barrow spat at the referee after a penalty was awarded against his team.
Fruta coach Jermain Christian was also dismissed after receiving two yellow cards, reportedly for repeatedly verbally abusing the referee.
The second round will take place at the Tucville Ground on Saturday, September 26. Santos FC face Western Tigers at 10:00h, followed by Police against Slingerz FC at 12:00h. Fruta Conquerors and GDF will meet in the final match at 14:00h.
