Paruima Sports Club of Guyana created history on Thursday, capturing the men’s open title at the inaugural Indigenous International Cup 2026 in Bananal, Brazil, with a 2–1 victory over host team Makayapang.
The Guyanese side overturned a first-half deficit to secure the landmark win, marking a significant achievement for indigenous football representation on the international stage.
Makayapang, representing Brazil, took the lead in the opening half through a well-taken free kick, putting Paruima under early pressure. However, the Guyanese outfit responded strongly after the break.
Rico Francis brought Paruima level immediately at the start of the second half, finishing decisively to shift momentum in his team’s favour. The comeback was completed when Kemron Thomas rose to head home from a free kick, giving Paruima the lead and ultimately the championship.
The result sealed a historic triumph for Paruima Sports Club, as they became the first champions of the tournament.
