The Government, through the Local Government and Regional Development Ministry, on Friday handed over two garbage compactor trucks to Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), and Mahdia in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) to further advance efforts to improve solid waste management and enhance service delivery within these communities.

The handing over was conducted by Deputy Permanent Secretary (PS) (Administration) of the Ministry Dr Josh Kanhai, who was joined by the Director of Sanitation Satrohan Nauth, along with representatives of the respective townships. This latest distribution brings the total number of garbage trucks distributed nationwide to 63, as the Government continues its phased rollout to strengthen waste collection systems and support local authorities across the country.
To date, the Government has handed over two similar trucks to Port Kaituma and Mabaruma in Region One; 10 to Region Two; 14 to Region Three; 10 to Region Four; and 22 to Region Six, with 19 allocated to Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and three to municipalities.

Region Nine has since received two trucks – one for an NDC and one for a municipality – while Region Eight now has one truck for the township of Mahdia and Region 10 has one for the township of Linden.
This brings the distribution to 55 NDCs and seven municipalities equipped with garbage compactor trucks.
The initiative forms part of the Government’s broader commitment to maintaining cleaner, healthier communities and ensuring that development is reflected in the everyday lives of citizens across Guyana.
