An alert cop travelling in a minibus on Saturday morning on the West Coast of Berbice (WCB) has led to the arrest of a passenger who had 6,764 grams of marijuana in his possession.
Based on reports received, at about 8:00h on the day in question, the constable, who was heading to the Mahaicony Police Station, boarded minibus BAC 4952 at Lovely Lass village, WCB. During the journey, the Police reportedly received “a high scent of marijuana”, and as such, immediately contacted a colleague who was on duty at the Mahaicony Police Station.
At about 08:41h, the rank stopped the said minibus on the Mahaicony Public Road and asked the passengers to take possession of their personal belongings and disembark the bus.
Two travelling bags (one black and one multi-coloured) were left under the second to last seat in the minibus.
The rank asked to whom the bags belonged, and the driver pointed out a 26-year-old passenger, Earl Vanlewin, who is a miner at Moruca in Region 1.
The rank took possession of the two bags and carried out a search, unearthing four wrapped parcels containing cannabis. The youth was told of the offence, arrested, and cautioned. He later told Police that he collected the two bags from a man at Rosignol and he was taking them to another man in Georgetown.
Vanlewin and the cannabis were escorted to Mahaicony Police Station, where the cannabis was weighed and amounted to 6,764 grams. Vanlewin was placed in Police custody, and is assisting with investigations.
