An operator attached to Toolsie Persaud Limited Logging Company was allegedly shot and killed by a co-worker on Saturday after he attempted to make peace during a row over an accusation. The shooting incident occurred at Tiger Creek, Essequibo River.
The dead man has been identified as 29-year-old Rohit Hansraj called “Master”, of Wakenaam Island, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).
Police stated that on the day in question at about 14:30h, the now dead man along with two other workers were consuming alcohol at the worksite.
However, the suspect approached one of the men and accused him of “looking” at his wife. At this time, Hansraj intervened and managed to get the suspect to return to his cabin.
Nevertheless, the suspect reportedly returned with a shotgun. “Hansraj and the suspect became embroiled in an argument during which the suspect discharged a round from the firearm which struck Hansraj to his upper left shoulder area,” the Police stated.
After committing the act, the suspect made good his escape in the bushes with the said firearm. The matter was reported to the Police and upon arriving at the scene, the detectives observed Hansraj lying face-up, clad in a pair of blue trousers and a grey jersey.
The body was examined and a gaping wound was seen on the upper left shoulder. The body was taken to the Bartica Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
The Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect as investigations continue.
