Pedal cyclist killed by speeding pick-up while attempting to cross road

A 79-year-old pedal cyclist, who has since been identified as Clayton Grant, was killed on the Meten-Meer-Zorg Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD), on Monday.

The accident occurred at about 20:55h and involved a motor pick-up bearing registration number PZZ 2877, owned by Sheriff Security Inc. At the time, the vehicle was driven by a 32-year-old man of Ruimzeight, WCD.
Reports revealed that the pick-up was proceeding along the roadway at an alleged fast rate of speed when the pedal cyclist attempted to cross the road and ended up in the path of the vehicle.
As a result, the front right portion of the vehicle hit the man off his bicycle. He was flung a short distance away from the impact.
Grant, who received several injuries about his body, was picked up in an unconscious state by Police ranks and immediately rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The man’s body is presently at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem. Further investigations are ongoing.
Two days ago, a 63-year-old man, Ameer Ally, a vendor of Adventure, Essequibo Coast, was killed in an accident on the Adventure Public Road, Essequibo Coast.
Police stated that motor car PWW 2293 was proceeding along the Adventure Public Road at a fast rate and struck down Ally, who was walking on the corner of the road.
As a result of the collision, the elderly man fell on the roadway and sustained injuries to his body. He was picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver of the motor car, who fled the scene, was subsequently arrested and charged.
