Under their Pepsi brand, beverage giants Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) have thrown their support behind the Petra/ ExxonMobil Under-14 Schools’ Football League that is slated to commence on Saturday, June 2.
This announcement was made on Thursday at a small ceremony wherein Pepsi confirmed their sponsorship of the tournament.
Pepsi Brand Manager Larry Wills noted that the company is excited to be part of any initiative that would contribute to the development of Guyanese youths.
“Giving back to the youths is very important to us,” he declared. “We know that the development of football in Guyana is really based on the development of youths in Guyana. We’re happy. We know that the youths are looking forward to this; they’ll be able to exhibit some of their talents,” Wills stated.
Co-Director of Petra, Troy Mendonca, expressed gratitude to not only Pepsi, but also to ExxonMobil, for enabling the gap between the Pee-Wee and Under-18 leagues to be bridged.
Action in this new league will kick off on Saturday morning with a march past and opening ceremony. Whilst the Boys’ league will begin on Saturday, the females will have to wait a little longer to be part of the action. The eight female teams will undergo a training camp for two weeks prior to the beginning of their competition. Their training will be supervised by technical staff of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF).
The male and female tournaments will run for seven and four weeks respectively.
