Prime Minister (PM) Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, performing the functions of President, on Monday received a courtesy call from the new British High Commissioner to Guyana, Joseph Guy Fisher, at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM). During the meeting, the officials discussed areas of mutual interest, including security cooperation, trade and investment, education and other avenues for collaboration. In a social media post, the OPM said that the engagement also underscored the longstanding relationship between Guyana and the United Kingdom (UK), particularly in advancing national development priorities.
High Commissioner Fisher was accompanied by Deputy British High Commissioner, Liam McShane. President Dr Irfaan Ali on April 23 accepted the Letters of Credence from Fisher, at the Office of the President.

In a statement shared on his social media page, the head of state had said discussions following the accreditation ceremony focused on strengthening bilateral relations between Guyana and the UK. Key areas identified for collaboration include healthcare, education, security, climate change, biodiversity, environmental services, tourism and infrastructure. He assumed duties in April, succeeding Jane Miller, who concluded her tenure in January after serving since July 2021. In addition to his role in Guyana, Fisher will also serve as non-resident ambassador to Suriname and as the UK’s ambassador to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
