Police assure protection for residents of Herstelling, Little Diamond
– robberies, vandalism raised during meeting
Robberies, noise nuisance, vandalism, and lack of firearms for Community Policing Group (CPG) members were among several issues raised at a public meeting on Saturday hosted Police Commander of 4B, Senior Superintendent Mahendra Siwnarine.
The meeting was reportedly organised by Chairman of Herstelling Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) Punit Jaigopaul and was held at Farm, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
During the meeting, a teacher attached to the Covent Garden Secondary School raised the issue of former students of the institution attacking and robbing them.
Another resident also vented her concern of yougsters driving motorcycles in the community, thus creating a lot of noise. According to the resident, the noise nuisance issue is prevalent on weekends. On this note, the resident recommended that street lights are erected in strategic areas within the NDC.
The issue of vandalism of properties was also raised. One such instance occurred about a week ago and despite the matter being reported, the Police are dragging their feet on the issue.
An attorney who is part of the Community Policing Group (CPG) stated the need for a relationship between the residents and the group.
The CPG is presently equipped with three motorcycles that were donated by the Home Affairs Ministry. A pick-up truck that was assigned to the division for CPG purposes is not accessible.
In addition, approval for the group to be given firearms is yet to be explored.
The NDC Chairman, Jaigopaul, addressed the issues that falls within the ambit of the NDC. He promised to resuscitate the CPG within the coming weeks, and to make the vehicle accessible when it is repaired.
He also related that the NDC will be holding monthly meetings until residents are satisfied.
Meanwhile, Police Commander Siwnarine took note of all the concerns raised while at the same time, took the opportunity to clear up any misconceptions and issues brought against the Guyana Police Force.
As such, he directed the ranks in his division to deal with issues raised at the meeting and assured residents that his team will work with residents and build trust in those communities.
