Police find illegal guns in Sophia, Little Diamond

Three persons are now in Police custody after they were found, in two separate searches, in possession of illegal guns and ammunition.

In the first instance, two Georgetown residents were arrested following a brief chase along the East Bank of Demerara (EBD). Based on information received, ranks of a mobile patrol at Diamond, EBD, on Wednesday afternoon observed a male acting in a suspicious manner while entering public transport in front of the Diamond hospital.
At the time, the vehicle was on the western side of the road facing north. The ranks decided to approach the vehicle and upon seeing the Police, the driver sped away. However, the patrol ranks gave chase and, subsequently, intercepted the vehicle along the East Bank Public Road.

According to the Police, it was observed upon intercepting the vehicle that the driver had thrown out an object. Upon checking, ranks found an unlicensed .32 pistol along with 12 live matching rounds.
Both the 26-year-old driver of James Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, and the 28-year-old occupant, a security guard of Perry Street, Tucville, Georgetown, were arrested.
They are currently assisting with the investigation. Meanwhile, the vehicle has been impounded.
With regard to the second case, a tip on Tuesday evening led ranks of the Guyana Police Force’s Narcotics Branch to arrest a male who was found in possession of an illegal weapon.
According to Police reports, the discovery was made around 19:20h.
The ranks, acting on information received, went to a location at Dennis Street, Sophia, Greater Georgetown. While there, they arrested a resident of the community after he was found in possession of an unlicensed .32 revolver without ammunition.
The suspect has since been taken into custody, where he is assisting with further investigations.
