The Guyana Police Force (GPF) launched its women’s rugby team on Friday, September 18, opening another opportunity for female ranks to develop their sporting skills and represent the organisation.
The launch brought together the players, team founder Carrin Carter and Captain Jelena Shepherd, with Commissioner of Police Dr Clifton Hicken delivering the feature address.
Hicken urged the women to bring discipline, commitment and teamwork to rugby, explaining that those qualities are also essential to their duties as Police Officers.
He highlighted the wider benefits of sporting involvement, including improved physical fitness, mental well-being and stronger relationships among ranks. He encouraged the players to stay focused, support one another and represent the Force professionally on and off the field.
Carter reflected on the team’s formation and the opportunity it creates for women within the GPF to take up rugby. Shepherd also delivered brief remarks as the team formally began its journey.
Earlier, Superintendent Delon Fraser welcomed the players and highlighted the significance of the new team as an addition to the Force’s sporting activities.
The players were introduced during the closing stage of the launch, while Anisa Carter delivered the vote of thanks.
