Police ranks come under attack at Stabroek Market, 2 suspects arrested

Ranks of Regional Police Division # 4 ‘A’ came under attack on Wednesday evening when they attempted to arrest a suspect at Stabroek Market, Georgetown.
Based on reports received, at about 18:25h, a mobile patrol unit was conducting a routine drive-through in the area when ranks observed an individual who was wanted by the Police for allegedly assaulting a peace officer and for resisting arrest.

However, as the ranks attempted to arrest the suspect, a human cordon was made around him, preventing the ranks from effecting the arrest.
A large crowd that was attracted to the commotion started to hurl missiles at the Police ranks, resulting in the patrol commander receiving injuries to his back and neck. In addition, the patrol vehicle belonging to the Guyana Police Force was damaged, and several other ranks sustained minor injuries.
The ranks were forced to discharge several rounds in the air in an attempt to control the situation and to prevent innocent bystanders from being injured by the missiles being thrown.
Shortly after, a 39-year-old vendor of Friendship, East Bank Demerara (EBD) and a 17-year-old unemployed man, both of whom were seen throwing missiles at the ranks and the patrol vehicle, were arrested. They remain in Police custody and are expected to be arraigned in court today.
