Police record 245 offences, 103 safety helmet violations in traffic crackdown

Some 245 cases were made out against errant drivers during a recent exercise at Traffic Headquarters as the Regional Police Divisions continue to intensify targeted enforcement exercises aimed at improving road safety.

Among the common offences recorded were failure to wear safety helmets; carrying pillion riders without safety helmets; unlicensed and uncertified motor vehicles; uninsured motor vehicles and breaches of insurance; unlicensed drivers; breaches of conditions of provisional licences; breaches of prescribed fitness and obscured or missing identification marks.
In addition, other offences included the failure to carry reflecting mirrors; motorcycles without silencers; failure to produce a driver’s licence; failure to stop when required by Police and breaches involving general dealer’s licences. Of the 245 cases that were made out, 103 errant drivers received tickets for failure to wearing safety helmet. Further, several motorcycles were lodged at police stations for verification of documents where none was produced to Police on demand.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) stated that these sustained enforcement operations form part of the GPF’s continued efforts to realign driver behaviour, reduce preventable road accidents, encourage the proper use of safety equipment and foster a culture of responsible road use.
Meanwhile, motorists are reminded that compliance with traffic laws should not only occur when Police ranks are present. Every driver has a responsibility to protect their own life and the lives of other road users.
