Policeman pleads not guilty to causing death charge

Ravinand Bissessar, 26, a Police Constable and resident of Good Intent, West Bank Demerara (WBD), entered a not guilty plea as he faced the charge of causing the death of 10-year-old Davin Sealey.
On Monday, the Policeman entered the plea after making his second appearance at the Wales Magistrate’s Court. The charge stated that on May 15, 2016 at Sisters Village, WBD, while driving car PLL 222, he struck Sealey, who was riding a bicycle along the roadway, resulting in the child’s death.
According to Police reports, on the day in question, Bissessar, who was stationed at the Wales Police Station, was attempting to negotiate a turn at Sisters Village when he lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a parked car before hitting the lad.
The Policeman‘s car came to halt when it crashed into a utility pole.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Sealey died of multiple injuries.
A breathalyzer test conducted on the defendant after the accident revealed that he had .66 micrograms of alcohol in his system.
At his arraignment in May, his driver’s licence was suspended for the duration of the trial and he was placed on $600,000. Bissessar had also answered to Driving under the Influence (DUI) charges.
The parents of the victim, Deon Sealey and Tulise Thomas were present at Monday’s court proceedings.
The case will continue before Magistrate Clive Nurse on September 9.
