Port Kaituma residents remanded

– charged for possession of gun, ammo and narcotics

Two miners of Port Kaituma, North West District, were Thursday remanded to prison on charges of possession of narcotics, firearm and ammunition when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Cheddi Dawson, 42, and Deon Debideen, 23, pleaded not guilty to a joint charge which stated that on November 2 last at Hotaqua, NWD, they cultivated cannabis.
Dawson further pleaded not guilty to another charge which stated that on the same day, he had a 20 gauge shotgun in his possession and one 20 gauge cartridge without being the holder of a firearm licenced.
Meanwhile, Debideen also pleaded guilty to an additional charge which stated that on October 29, he made use of threatening behaviour towards Abraham Daniels which caused a breach of the peace.
Police prosecutor Neville Jeffers objected to bail for the duo, stating that the defendants have not raised any special reason to be given bail.
The unrepresented defendants were placed on remand and are scheduled to make their next court appearance on November 15, 2016, at Mabaruma.
