The revolutionary Cuban leader died on Friday, November 25, 2016, at age 90. He built a communist state on the doorstep of the United States and defied, for five decades, US efforts to topple him.

The reflection, hosted by the PPP, was held at Red House in Kingston, Georgetown, and was attended by several members of the party, as well as members of the diplomatic corp, including Cuban Ambassador to Guyana, Julio César González Marchante.

During the event, presentations were made by former Presidents, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo and Donald Ramotar. PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee also made a contribution.

Fidel Castro governed the Republic of Cuba for 47 years as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and then as President from 1976 to 2006 (de jure until 2008). Politically a Marxist–Leninist and Cuban nationalist, he also served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from 1961 until 2011.

Under his Administration, Cuba became a one-partysocialist state; industry and business were nationalised, and state socialist reforms were implemented throughout society.
