Pratab muscles his way to powerlifting supremacy

As the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) prepares to head to Mexico in July, top power lifters on Saturday went head to head in an exhibition of muscle and strength.
The three attempt competition featured 16 of Guyana’s most promising power lifters including Colin ‘Mr. Clean’ Chesney and John ‘Big John’ Edwards. The competition saw participants lifting in excess of 400 pounds in their fight for supremacy.

The scarcely populated female category saw Natoya Robinson and Jackey Toney fighting for the top spot. In the end, it was Natoya who reigned supreme by recording 75kg wilks. Toney copped second place with 60kg wilks.
In the male category the third and fourth places were taken by Wazim Mohamed and Colin ‘Mr. Clean’ Chesney with wilks of 175kg and 185kg’s respectively. However, a tie breaker was required to crown the champion of the Saturday’s activities. The tie breaker saw John ‘Big John’ Edwards and Martin Pratab competing in a rep off for the top spot.
It was Pratab who powered his way to victory with a convincing ten 315kg reps whilst Edwards struggled to complete the tenth rep and placed second with nine 315kg reps.
The event came as a fundraiser to accumulate funds and prepare powerlifters for the upcoming North American Power lifting Championship in Mexico from July 31 to August 4. National Power lifter Orin Alleyne urged patrons to look out for a string of fundraisers as the Federation seeks to send a fifteen member team to the championships.
