President Dr Irfaan Ali on Wednesday held a telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, during which they discussed investment opportunities, investment protection and cooperation on biodiversity.

In a post on his social media page, President Ali said the discussion covered several areas of mutual interest, including opportunities for investment under the Guyana-Canadian Commerce Cooperation Agreement.
“Today [Wednesday], I had a productive phone call with the Hon Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, to discuss various areas of mutual interest, including opportunities for investments within the development framework of the Guyana-Canadian Commerce Cooperation Agreement, investment protection and deepening our partnership on biodiversity,” the President stated.
The telephone conversation follows a meeting between the two leaders in Ottawa on May 8, during which they discussed bilateral relations, economic cooperation, climate change and biodiversity, as Guyana and Canada marked 60 years of diplomatic relations.
During that meeting, Carney highlighted the longstanding ties between the two countries, including family, business and cultural connections, while reaffirming their shared interests in peace, stability and territorial integrity in the Caribbean Community (Caricom) region.
He also commended Guyana’s economic growth under Ali’s leadership and congratulated the President on his re-election.
Ali, in turn, called for Canada to play a greater role in Guyana’s economic diversification, innovation and development, pointing to the country’s historical importance as one of Guyana’s largest trading partners.
“Canada, at one time, was our largest trading partner, and that is some of the discussions we want to have to see how, in this new dimension, the new economy we are building, Canada can play a deeper and greater role in the diversification, innovation, and advancement of our economy,” Ali said at the time.
The leaders also highlighted their countries’ shared interests in climate action, tropical forests and biodiversity protection, with Ali emphasising the importance of strengthening cooperation in those areas.
