President’s Cup horse meet joins Cricket Carnival activities

Just a little over a month after the Guyana Cup horse meet had locked down the West Coast of Berbice, the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee (JJTRC) is returning to offer enthusiasts yet another exciting event.
As the Cricket Carnival Organizing Committee move to ensure they have a wide variety of activities, fitting for all tastes when they embark on their inaugural event, the President’s Cup has been joined to the Carnival’s list of activities.
The Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee (JJTRC) confirmed its involvement last Friday when it disclosed that the annual President’s Cup races will be added to the flair of Cricket Carnival.
The President’s Cup, one of Guyana’s most prestigious horse meets, is set for next Sunday, September 18, 2022, at the Rising Sun Turf Club, West Coast Berbice, and will see horses and jockeys participating in 9 races for over Gy$10M in cash and prizes.
The feature race of the day will be the President’s Cup, to be contested over one mile for a reported purse of $5,812,000. The next feature race would see 3-year-old horses contesting over seven furlongs for a purse of $1,937,000. The E Class race would likewise be contested over 7 furlongs for a purse of $1,937,000.
According to preliminary reports, the likes of Guyana Cup Champion Alado, Wild Texas Tom, Memories, and Early Bird are likely to feature in the President’s Cup – an event that has been around since 1992.

According to the JJTRC’s social media, registration for interested owners and jockeys is still ongoing. The President’s Cup is being sponsored by Banks DIH through their Guinness, XM Rum and Johnnie Walker brands. AJM Enterprise has also been listed as a sponsor.

Glimpses of what to expect next Sunday at the President’s Cup horse meet

Last Saturday, Police Commissioner (ag) Clifton Hicken, along with high-profile ranks from Region 5 and JJTRC’s Chairman Nasrudeen Mohamed Jr, took a tour of the Rising Sun facility in order to map out a traffic plan.
The exercise was agreed upon between the group, owing to the massive traffic jams that occurred on August, 14th 2022, during and after that horse-racing event.
As such, the Region 5 Traffic Department has vowed to work along with organizers to ensure there is no recurrence of traffic jams at the President’s Cup.
Cricket Carnival is a first-of-its-kind entertainment event that will go hand in hand with the back end of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in Guyana. It will run from September 16 to October 2.
