Prison clerk gets bail on ganja trafficking charge

A 22-year-old data entry clerk attached to the Lusignan Prison, who was allegedly caught smuggling marijuana into the penitentiary, was released on $50,000 bail on a narcotics trafficking charge.

Joshua Sookdeo of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD), appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on June 8, 2021, at Lusignan Prison, he had 80 grams of marijuana in his possession for the purpose of trafficking. He returns to court on July 8, 2021.

Police has stated that on the day in question, upon his arrival at work, Sookdeo was subjected to a mandatory search during which 80 grams of ganja was found concealed in an Ensure bottle inside of his haversack.
As such, he was arrested and later charged.
