Questions from abroad

Dear Editor,
When my friends from abroad enquire about the elections in Guyana, and I tell them that we are still waiting on the results, their immediate reaction is shock and bewilderment.
Sometimes that leads to questions about the size of our population, and my answer often draws a chuckle. To save further embarrassment, I am then forced to describe what is happening at GECOM.
Their subsequent reaction can be summarised into the following three perplexing questions: 1) How is it that we have an undignified head of state who refuses to concede he lost the elections? 2)Why, in the first place, do we have such unprofessional and prejudiced people operating GECOM? 3)Why were the riggers, who attempted to fabricate the results in full view of the public and the international community, not thrown behind bars?
I can tell that, despite my best efforts to explain that most Guyanese do not condone the rigging, my friends are still bemused; for, in their country, it is taken for granted that election officials are people of stature and integrity.

Sincerely,
Ravi Ram
